Mary, a petite and unassuming seamstress, lived in Baltimore during the tumultuous War of 1812. As the British forces threatened the city, Francis Scott Key witnessed the relentless bombardment of Fort McHenry from a distance. Inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying defiantly, he penned the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner."
A Monumental Task
After the battle, the United States government commissioned a new, larger flag to replace the one that had flown over Fort McHenry. Mary Pickersgill, known for her exceptional sewing skills, was chosen for the momentous task.
Working day and night, Mary meticulously crafted the massive flag, measuring 30 feet by 42 feet. The 15 stars represented the 15 states at the time, while the 15 stripes symbolized the original 13 colonies.
A Legacy of Courage
On September 13, 1814, the Star-Spangled Banner was raised over Fort McHenry. Its vibrant colors and imposing size became a beacon of hope and inspiration for the American people.
Mary Pickersgill's unwavering spirit and skillful craftsmanship played a pivotal role in creating a symbol that would forever inspire generations of Americans. Her legacy as the "Mother of the Star-Spangled Banner" continues to this day.
Honoring a National Treasure
Mary Pickersgill lived a humble life, but her contribution to American history cannot be overstated. In recognition of her extraordinary achievements, she was awarded a pension by Congress and her grave in Baltimore is designated as a National Historic Landmark.
The Star-Spangled Banner remains a cherished symbol of American patriotism and a testament to the enduring legacy of Mary Pickersgill. Her story serves as an inspiration to all who strive to make a difference, no matter how big or small.
