Mary, a petite and unassuming seamstress, lived in Baltimore during the tumultuous War of 1812. As the British forces threatened the city, Francis Scott Key witnessed the relentless bombardment of Fort McHenry from a distance. Inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying defiantly, he penned the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner."
