In 1852, Crumpler moved to Boston and began attending medical school at the New England Female Medical College. She was the only African American student in the school and faced discrimination from both her classmates and professors. However, she persisted and graduated in 1864, becoming the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States.

After graduating from medical school, Crumpler opened a medical practice in Boston. She primarily served the city's African American community, who had limited access to medical care. Crumpler was a skilled physician and her patients trusted her implicitly. She was known for her compassion and her dedication to providing quality care to her patients.

In addition to her medical practice, Crumpler was also an active advocate for the rights of African Americans. She spoke out against slavery and discrimination and worked to improve the lives of her people. She was a member of the American Medical Association and the National Medical Association, and she served as president of the latter organization from 1880 to 1881.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was a pioneer in the field of medicine and a tireless advocate for the rights of African Americans. Her work helped to pave the way for other women of color to enter the profession and her legacy continues to inspire generations of medical professionals.

In 1989, the United States Postal Service issued a stamp in honor of Dr. Crumpler. She was also inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler is a role model for all those who dream of making a difference in the world. Her story is a reminder that anything is possible if you have the determination and the courage to pursue your goals.
