Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen was one of the most extraordinary figures in British military history. A brilliant intelligence officer, he played a key role in the Boer War and World War I. Meinertzhagen was born in London in 1878. He was the son of a wealthy German merchant and a British mother. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, where he studied law.
