Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States. He served four terms, from 1933 to 1945, and led the country through the Great Depression and World War II. Roosevelt was a complex and controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most influential presidents in American history.

Early Life and Education

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the only child of James Roosevelt, a wealthy businessman, and Sara Delano Roosevelt, a socialite. Roosevelt grew up in a privileged environment, but he was also exposed to the harsh realities of life outside his family's mansion. He witnessed the poverty and inequality that existed in the United States, and he developed a strong sense of social justice.

Roosevelt attended Groton School, a prestigious boarding school in Massachusetts. He then went on to Harvard College, where he studied history and political science. After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt attended Columbia Law School. He did not complete his law degree, however, because he decided to run for the New York State Senate.

Political Career

Roosevelt began his political career in 1910, when he was elected to the New York State Senate. He served in the Senate for two terms, and then was elected to the United States Senate in 1913. Roosevelt was a rising star in the Democratic Party, and he was soon appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson.

In 1920, Roosevelt was nominated for vice president on the Democratic ticket. He ran with presidential candidate James M. Cox, but they were defeated by the Republican ticket of Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge.

Roosevelt returned to the United States Senate after his defeat in the 1920 election. He served in the Senate for another 12 years, and he became one of the most respected members of the body.

The Great Depression

In 1929, the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. The Depression was the worst economic crisis in American history, and it caused widespread unemployment and poverty. Roosevelt was elected president in 1932, and he promised to help the country recover from the Depression.

Roosevelt's New Deal program was designed to put people back to work and stimulate the economy. The New Deal included a variety of programs, such as the Works Progress Administration (WPA),the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC),and the Social Security Act. The New Deal helped to reduce unemployment and poverty, but it did not end the Depression.

World War II

In 1939, World War II began in Europe. Roosevelt was a strong supporter of the Allies, and he provided them with military and economic aid. In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and the United States entered the war. Roosevelt led the country through the war, and he oversaw the Allied victory in 1945.

Legacy

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the most influential presidents in American history. He led the country through the Great Depression and World War II, and he helped to create a more just and equitable society. Roosevelt's legacy is still felt today, and he is considered to be one of the greatest presidents in American history.
