Obsession, Fury, And The Scandal Behind The World's Favorite Board Game By Mary Pilon The Monopolists: Obsession Fury And The Scandal Behind The World S Favorite Board Game

In 1933, during the depths of the Great Depression, a struggling salesman named Charles Darrow invented Monopoly, a board game that would become a worldwide sensation. But as Mary Pilon reveals in her fascinating new book, Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game, the story behind Monopoly is far more complex and scandalous than anyone ever imagined.

Pilon's book tells the story of Elizabeth Magie, a brilliant inventor who created the original version of Monopoly in 1903. Magie's game, which she called "The Landlord's Game," was designed to teach people about the evils of capitalism. But when Darrow stole Magie's idea and patented it as his own, she was furious. A bitter legal battle ensued, and Magie eventually won a small settlement from Parker Brothers, the company that manufactured Monopoly.

But the story doesn't end there. Pilon also reveals that Parker Brothers engaged in a decades-long campaign to suppress the truth about Monopoly's origins. The company threatened to sue anyone who dared to suggest that Darrow was not the sole inventor of the game. And it even went so far as to destroy all copies of Magie's original game.

Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game is a gripping tale of greed, betrayal, and the lengths to which people will go to protect their secrets. It's a must-read for anyone who loves Monopoly, board games, or American history.
