Tales of First Round Nothing: A Journey into the Heart of College Football
In the fall of 2007, I was a young reporter covering college football for the first time. I was fresh out of college and had never been to a game before, but I was eager to learn and eager to share the stories of the players, coaches, and fans who make the sport so special.

I spent that season traveling to stadiums across the country, from the Big House in Ann Arbor to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. I covered some of the biggest games of the year, including the BCS National Championship Game. I interviewed some of the biggest names in college football, including Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Bob Stoops.
But it wasn't just the big games and the big names that made that season so special. It was the people I met along the way. I met players who had overcome incredible obstacles to achieve their dreams. I met coaches who had dedicated their lives to helping their players succeed. And I met fans who loved their teams with a passion that was unmatched by anything else I had ever seen.
Tales of First Round Nothing is a story about all of those people. It's a story about the power of sport to bring people together, and it's a story about the importance of never giving up on your dreams.
Excerpt from Tales of First Round Nothing
I was sitting in the press box at the Rose Bowl, watching the BCS National Championship Game. It was the biggest game of the year, and I was lucky to be there to cover it.
As the game went on, I couldn't help but think about how far I had come in such a short amount of time. Just a few years earlier, I had been a college student who had never been to a football game. Now, I was covering the biggest game of the year for a national magazine.
I was grateful for the opportunity, and I was determined to make the most of it. I wanted to write a story that would capture the excitement of the game, but I also wanted to write a story that would tell the human stories behind the game.
I wanted to write a story about the players who had worked so hard to get to this point. I wanted to write a story about the coaches who had dedicated their lives to helping their players succeed. And I wanted to write a story about the fans who loved their teams with a passion that was unmatched by anything else I had ever seen.
I hope you enjoy reading Tales of First Round Nothing as much as I enjoyed writing it.
