Stubby was a stray dog who became a war hero during World War I. He served with the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, and fought in 17 battles. Stubby was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. He was also promoted to Sergeant and became the first dog to ever hold the rank.
Stubby was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1916. He was a stray puppy when he met Robert Conroy, a soldier in the 102nd Infantry Regiment. Conroy took Stubby with him to war in Europe, where the dog quickly became a mascot for the regiment.
Stubby was a brave and loyal dog. He would often run into battle with the soldiers, barking and growling at the enemy. He also helped to protect the soldiers from poison gas by barking a warning when he smelled it. Stubby was even credited with saving the life of a soldier by barking at a German soldier who was about to shoot him.
In 1918, Stubby was wounded twice in the same battle. He received the Purple Heart for his wounds and was promoted to Sergeant. Stubby became the first dog to ever hold the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army.
Stubby returned home to the United States a hero. He was given a ticker-tape parade in New York City and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. Stubby died in 1926 and is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
