Songlines and Fault Lines: A Journey into the Heart of Australia
Australia is a land of contrasts, a continent of extremes. From the lush rainforests of the north to the arid deserts of the outback, from the snow-capped mountains of the south to the sun-kissed beaches of the west, Australia is a land of incredible diversity.

But beneath this diversity lies a unity, a deep connection to the land that has been passed down through generations of Aboriginal Australians. This connection is expressed through songlines, Dreaming stories that tell of the creation of the land and the journey of the ancestral beings.
In Songlines and Fault Lines, award-winning author and journalist Nicolas Rothwell takes us on a journey into the heart of Australia, exploring the country's ancient songlines, geological wonders, and diverse cultures.
Rothwell's journey begins in the Kimberley, a vast and rugged region of Western Australia. Here, he meets with Aboriginal elders and learns about the songlines that crisscross the land, connecting sacred sites and telling the story of the Dreaming. He also explores the region's stunning geological formations, including the Bungle Bungle Range, a series of beehive-shaped sandstone domes.
From the Kimberley, Rothwell travels to the Pilbara, a mineral-rich region of Western Australia. Here, he witnesses the impact of mining on the land and its people. He also explores the region's ancient rock formations, including the Karijini National Park, a series of gorges and waterfalls carved by the Fortescue River.
From the Pilbara, Rothwell travels to the Great Sandy Desert, a vast and unforgiving landscape. Here, he learns about the survival skills of the Aboriginal people who have lived in the desert for thousands of years. He also explores the region's geological wonders, including the Wolfe Creek Crater, a meteorite impact crater that is one of the largest in the world.
Rothwell's journey ends in the Great Victoria Desert, a vast and desolate landscape. Here, he reflects on the beauty and fragility of the Australian outback. He also explores the region's geological wonders, including the Uluru (Ayers Rock),a sandstone monolith that is one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia.
Songlines and Fault Lines is a lyrical and evocative journey into the heart of Australia. Rothwell's writing is both poetic and informative, and his insights into the country's geology, culture, and history are fascinating.
This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the land Down Under.
