Otto the Dog Learns About Veterans Day
Otto the dog loved to play in the park. He loved to run and jump and chase squirrels. But one day, Otto saw something that made him stop and think.
Otto saw a man sitting on a bench. The man was wearing a uniform, and he had a medal on his chest. Otto had never seen a man like this before.
Otto went up to the man and asked him, "Excuse me, sir, but what are you wearing?"
The man smiled and said, "I am a veteran. I served in the United States Army."
Otto was impressed. "Wow," he said. "You're a hero!"
The man laughed. "No, I'm not a hero," he said. "I'm just a man who did his job."
Otto didn't understand. "But you fought for our country," he said. "That makes you a hero."
The man sighed. "I guess you could say that," he said. "But I didn't do it for the glory. I did it because I love my country."
Otto thought about what the man said. He realized that the man was right. Being a hero isn't about getting glory. It's about ng what's right, even when it's hard.
Otto saluted the man and said, "Thank you for your service."
The man smiled and said, "You're welcome, son."
Otto went back to playing in the park, but he never forgot the man he met that day. He knew that veterans like that man deserved to be honored, not just on Veterans Day, but every day.
