The novel begins with Backderf's first encounter with Dahmer in high school. Dahmer is a shy and awkward teenager, but he quickly becomes known for his bizarre behavior. He is obsessed with dead animals, and he often brings them to school in his backpack. He also has a strange fascination with knives, and he is often seen sharpening them in class.

As Dahmer's behavior becomes more and more bizarre, Backderf and his friends begin to suspect that something is wrong. They try to talk to Dahmer about his behavior, but he refuses to listen. Eventually, Dahmer's behavior becomes so erratic that he is expelled from school.

After Dahmer is expelled from school, he begins to spiral out of control. He drops out of college, and he starts drinking heavily. He also begins to experiment with drugs, and he soon becomes addicted to heroin.

In 1987, Dahmer commits his first murder. He kills a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks, and he disposes of his body in the woods. Over the next four years, Dahmer kills 16 more people. He lures his victims to his apartment, where he kills them and disposes of their bodies in various ways.

In 1991, Dahmer is finally arrested. He is convicted of 15 murders, and he is sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison in 1994.
