Little Libraries are small, weatherproof boxes filled with books that are free to borrow and share. They are typically located in public places, such as parks, schools, and libraries. Anyone can take a book from a Little Library, and anyone can donate a book to one.
The first Little Library was built in Hudson, Wisconsin, in 2009 by Todd Bol. Bol was inspired to build the library after his mother passed away and he wanted to find a way to share her love of reading with others. Bol built the first Little Library out of an old birdhouse, and he stocked it with books from his mother's collection.
Since then, the Little Libraries movement has grown rapidly. There are now over 100,000 Little Libraries in over 100 countries around the world. Little Libraries have been built in all sorts of places, from rural villages to urban neighborhoods.
The people who build and maintain Little Libraries are all volunteers. They are passionate about providing access to books for everyone, and they believe that Little Libraries can make a real difference in their communities.
Little Libraries, Big Heroes tells the stories of some of these volunteers. We meet people like:
- Arthur, a homeless man in San Francisco who built a Little Library out of a shopping cart.
- Arlene, a retired teacher in New York City who built a Little Library in her apartment building.
- A group of students in India who built a Little Library out of a rickshaw.
These are just a few of the many inspiring stories that are told in Little Libraries, Big Heroes. These stories show us the power of books and community, and they remind us that anything is possible if we work together.
If you are looking for a book that will inspire you, motivate you, and make you believe in the power of community, then Little Libraries, Big Heroes is the book for you.
