As a parent, one of your biggest fears is probably that your teenager will get into a car accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. In 2020, there were over 2,000 fatal crashes involving teen drivers.

While you can't completely prevent your teenager from getting into a car accident, there are some things you can do to assess their risk and take steps to keep them safe.

Risk Factors for Teen Drivers

There are a number of factors that can increase a teenager's risk of crashing a car, including:

  • Age: Teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are at the highest risk of crashing.
  • Gender: Male teen drivers are more likely to crash than female teen drivers.
  • Experience: Teen drivers with less than six months of driving experience are at the highest risk of crashing.
  • Speed: Speeding is a major factor in teen car crashes.
  • Distractions: Distractions, such as talking on a cell phone or texting, are a major cause of teen car crashes.
  • Impairment: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a major factor in teen car crashes.

Signs That Your Teenager May Be at Risk

If your teenager exhibits any of the following signs, they may be at an increased risk of crashing a car:

  • They have a history of traffic violations.
  • They frequently speed or drive recklessly.
  • They are often distracted while driving.
  • They have a history of substance abuse.
  • They are under a lot of stress.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Teenager Safe

If you are concerned about your teenager's driving, there are a number of things you can do to help keep them safe:

  • Talk to your teenager about the risks of driving. Make sure they understand the dangers of speeding, driving under the influence, and distracted driving.
  • Set clear rules and expectations for driving. Let your teenager know that they are not allowed to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and that they must obey the speed limit and avoid distractions.
  • Monitor your teenager's driving. Ride with them in the car and observe their driving habits.
  • Take your teenager to a driving safety course. This can help them learn how to drive safely and avoid accidents.
  • Limit your teenager's driving privileges. If you are concerned about your teenager's driving, you may want to limit their driving privileges, such as only allowing them to drive to and from school or work.

Talking to your teenager about the risks of driving and setting clear rules and expectations can help to keep them safe on the road. By being aware of the risk factors for teen drivers and taking steps to mitigate those risks, you can help to prevent your teenager from getting into a car accident.
