In 1976, Mulroney entered politics and was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. He quickly rose through the ranks of the party and became leader in 1983.
Prime Minister of Canada
Mulroney led the Progressive Conservatives to victory in the 1984 election and became Prime Minister of Canada. He was the first Prime Minister from Quebec since Wilfrid Laurier in 1896.
During his time as Prime Minister, Mulroney implemented a number of bold policies, including the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement, the privatization of many government-owned businesses, and the of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Mulroney also played a key role in the negotiation of the Meech Lake Accord, which was intended to address the concerns of Quebec nationalists. However, the accord was ultimately defeated in the House of Commons, which led to Mulroney's resignation as Prime Minister in 1993.
